Transport America | Truckload Transportation & Fleet Operations

How Performix connected the driver’s mobile workday with pre-trip inspection and repair-center operations, and helped lift driver retention by an estimated 15–20%.

THE BUSINESS IDEA
Transport America treated driver retention as a workflow problem, not only a recruiting problem. The premise was simple: drivers who struggle with their tools every day (chasing the next load, guessing at pay, waiting at the shop with no idea when the truck will be ready) are more likely to leave. Performix connected the driver’s mobile workday with vehicle inspection and repair-center operations so the job itself became easier to do.

Business Outcome

Driver retention improved by an estimated 15–20%.

Why this case matters: Retention is usually treated as an HR or pay problem. This engagement shows that a focused technology investment, aimed at the moments that frustrate drivers most, can move a people metric as well as an operational one.

  1. The Business Challenge

Driver turnover is one of the most persistent and expensive problems in truckload transportation. The American Trucking Associations has repeatedly reported annual turnover at large truckload carriers near or above 90%, and in some years above 100%. Every departure brings recruiting, onboarding and lost-capacity costs. Transport America faced the same pressure: drivers were not staying long enough, and the company needed to make the job more predictable and easier to manage.

The opportunity was broader than another dispatch tool. On the road, drivers needed the next pickup, their earnings and a way to reach home in one place. Back at the shop, fleet operations needed better coordination of inspections, maintenance and repairs, the moments when drivers often sat idle without knowing how long the wait would be.

THE KEY QUESTION
How can technology remove everyday friction for drivers while giving fleet operations clear visibility into vehicle readiness and repair downtime?

  1. The Performix Solution

Performix designed the solution around the driver’s actual day rather than around individual back-office systems. It had two connected parts:

  • Driver mobile app — routing, next pickup, earnings, family communication, safety features and pre-trip inspection in a single experience.
  • Repair-center workflow — a mobile/web scheduling tool and in-shop displays that route incoming trucks, assign repair bays and publish expected downtime.

Together, the two parts linked what happened on the road with what happened in the shop, so drivers and the repair team worked from the same information.

  1. On the Road: The Driver App

Rather than treating routing, earnings, communication and vehicle tasks as separate experiences, Performix brought them into one mobile workflow organized around the driver’s day:

  • Routing and next pickup — the current assignment, route and next stop at a glance.
  • Earnings — up-to-date visibility into what the driver is making.
  • Family communication — an easy way to stay in touch with home during long stretches on the road.
  • Safety — safety-focused features built into the daily workflow rather than delivered separately.
  • Pre-trip inspection — a guided checklist completed before each trip (see Section 4).
  • Motion lockout — the app shuts off while the truck is moving, keeping the driver’s attention on the road.
  1. Pre-Trip Inspection, Built Into the Workflow

Pre-trip inspection became part of starting the day rather than a separate piece of paperwork. Before departure, the app walked the driver through key checks, including:

  • Tire pressure
  • Exhaust system
  • Lights
  • Turn signals
  • Seat belts
  • Other vehicle-condition items on the checklist

Each completed inspection was recorded in the app, giving the fleet a digital record that the vehicle was checked before the trip began, and a stronger basis for maintenance follow-up and inspection documentation.

  1. In the Shop: Repair-Center Coordination

When a truck needed service, the second component took over. A mobile/web scheduling workflow, supported by status displays in the repair center, moved each truck through a clear sequence:

  • Route the truck to the appropriate repair center.
  • Check it into the repair-center workflow.
  • Assign it to an available repair bay.
  • Set an expected repair and downtime window.
  • Show vehicle and bay status on the shop’s operational displays.
  • Share the expected downtime with the driver, who can plan around it instead of waiting without information.

The result was less uncertainty on both sides: the shop could see its workload at a glance, and drivers knew how long their truck would be out of service.

  1. Business Impact

AN ESTIMATED 15–20% IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVER RETENTION
Driver retention improved by an estimated 15–20% after the connected experience was in place.

No single feature produced the result. The gain came from improving the driver’s experience end to end:

Driver experience

One app for routing, pickups, earnings, family contact, safety and vehicle tasks.

Vehicle readiness

Pre-trip inspection became a guided, recorded step before every trip.

Repair coordination

Bay assignment and published downtime windows replaced waiting without visibility.

Retention

Together, these changes made the job more predictable, which is reflected in the retention gain above.

  1. Technology Foundation

The solution was built on a practical mobile and web stack suited to the requirements and devices of the time:

  • Android • Java     • PHP     • JavaScript     • HTML5     • Adaptive Design

Technology note: This stack reflects the original implementation and is included as project history, not as a description of Performix’s current architecture.

  1. Why the Approach Worked

The engagement worked because it aimed technology at the specific moments that shaped a driver’s day: getting the next assignment, knowing what they were earning, starting the trip and getting through a repair.

In practice, a driver started the day in the app, completed the pre-trip inspection and ran the route with pickup, earnings and family contact in one place. When the truck needed service, the repair-center workflow routed it to a bay, set a downtime window and shared it with the driver, while shop displays kept the repair team current.

Four principles made the difference:

  • Problem-led design: Technology organized around a business bottleneck, driver attrition, rather than around a system upgrade.
  • People-centered workflow: The driver’s daily experience treated as part of the operating model, not an afterthought.
  • Connected operations: Road, inspection and repair activity linked into one process, using mobile, web and shop displays together.
  • Operational visibility: Vehicle status, bay assignments and expected downtime shared with the people who needed them, when they needed them.

It reflects a core Performix belief: technology creates the most value when it improves how people work, not just how systems function.

  1. Executive Takeaway

Driver retention is not only a recruiting challenge. The everyday experience of the job (receiving the next assignment, completing inspections, getting through a repair) shapes whether drivers stay.

By connecting the driver’s mobile workflow to the processes that keep the fleet running, Performix helped Transport America make that experience more predictable, and driver retention improved by an estimated 15–20%.

The lesson carries over to any operation that depends on frontline people: look past the isolated task and fix the full experience, connecting people, information and process.

The Performix Principle

Start with the business bottleneck. Understand the people and workflows around it. Then design technology that makes the process work better. This case study proves it.
